Julius Baker

 都說到他豐富的音色變化及樂句表情

Whom do the professionals revere among their contemporaries and forebears? Martin Cull ingford asks seven flautists to nominate their Experts' Expert JEANNE BAXTRESSER

Julius Baker was my guiding inspiration from the first moment I heard him as a young student. There was something in his sound that was indefinable and unique...a quality that reached out to flautists all over the world. The extraordinary beauty of his tone was matched by his creativity in using an infinite variety of tonal colours and shadings. They were always perfectly placed for effects I can only call magical. His technical prowess was legendary and his musicianship was always fascinating and compelling. Julius simply loved playing the flute and one can hear that passion to this day in his remarkable recordings, both solo and orchestral. For a wonderful introduction to his mastery, I recommend his Debussy Trio for flute, viola (Fuchs) and harp (Newell) on the old Decca Gold Label series.

JEFFREY KHANER

The recorded flautist whom I most respect and admire is certainly Julius Baker. As a young student, I remember so well being captivated by his tone — even on scratchy LPs — and entranced by his phrasing. The recordings of the Debussy and Roussel trios are magical in their use of tone colour and the Bach sonatas are unmatched in their simple, elegant and sophisticated musicianship. In addition to all of his solo recordings, I eagerly sought out the orchestral recordings of virtually all the major repertoire. His sound gave a colour to the whole orchestral timbre that makes those recordings very special for me
